How a shipment is built

1. Specification and quotation. Products, volumes and destination determine whether we quote FOB a European port or CIF Dakar. CIF is the more common structure for buyers who prefer not to arrange maritime freight themselves.

2. Documentation. Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, health or sanitary certificates where required, and bill of lading. Senegal operates pre-shipment verification programmes, and a file that is incomplete on departure becomes a demurrage problem on arrival.

3. Loading and transit. A 20ft container carries roughly 20 to 25 tonnes of bagged or canned goods. Transit from northern European ports to Dakar typically runs 10 to 14 days.

4. Payment. Irrevocable letter of credit, documentary collection (CAD), or advance payment, depending on the relationship and the volumes involved.

Few importers need 25 tonnes of a single product. Consolidating rice, oil, pasta, canned goods and beverages into one container spreads the freight cost across a full product range and lets you test several categories on a single shipment — without committing to a container of each.
