Founded in 1783 by Jacob Schweppe in Geneva, Schweppes effectively invented the commercial carbonated drink. Now owned by The Coca-Cola Company in Europe, it is the reference point for mixers: its tonic waters, Bitter Lemon and Lemon are the standard companions to gin, whisky and pastis in bars across Europe.
What has driven sales since 2020, however, is the no and low alcohol trend. Customers increasingly order a Schweppes Tonic or Bitter Lemon as a drink in its own right, without spirits. What was a complementary market has become a primary one in food service.
Tonic Water 1L — the bar format par excellence · Bitter Lemon 1L — an aperitif staple · Mojito 1.35L — the leading home format · Citrus Mix 1.35L — a fresh, highly versatile flavour · Tonic Water 33cl can — ideal for single-serve food service
The range runs across six formats to cover every channel:
For an optimised retail shelf we recommend a core assortment of six references: Tonic Water 1L, Bitter Lemon 1L, Mojito 1.35L, Citrus Mix 1.35L, Bitter Lemon 33cl can and Tonic Water 33cl can. These six cover the large majority of Schweppes sales in French retail.
In food service, priority goes to the 1L PET or the 33cl can depending on the type of venue: the 1L is the standard bar format — tonic for gin, bitter lemon for whisky — while the 33cl can suits terraces and single-serve sales.
