The global sugar market in 2025

Refined white sugar is one of the most traded food commodities in the world. Global 2024/2025 production is estimated at 186.6 million tonnes according to the USDA, with Brazil as the world's leading exporter (representing over 50% of global raw sugar exports). Sub-Saharan Africa, the fifth-largest producing region, remains structurally import-dependent to cover its growing demand.

ICUMSA 45 sugar prices are traded on the London futures market (Euronext Liffe, Contract No. 407) and on the CBOT in Chicago (Contract #11 for raw sugar). Understanding these futures markets is essential to securing your purchase prices before signing an export contract.

📊 Why ICUMSA 45?

ICUMSA (International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis) measures sugar colour: the lower the number, the whiter and purer the sugar. ICUMSA 45 is the premium standard used for direct consumption. ICUMSA 150 is suitable for food manufacturing (beverages, biscuits). ICUMSA 600-1200 is brown sugar for distilling and industry.
