Broken rice: an underestimated commodity with strong potential

Broken rice (Brewers Rice) is the natural by-product of rice milling and polishing. Once considered second-tier, broken rice has become a strategic raw material for several industries in Africa.

The 3 major industrial uses

  • Brewing: African breweries (HEINEKEN, DIAGEO, CASTEL...) use broken rice as a starch adjunct in beer and malt beverage production. West Africa is Africa's largest beer market per capita. Brewery demand for broken rice is structurally strong.
  • Industrial starch: Rice starch extraction for food industries (thickeners, binders) and non-food (paper, textiles). Growing industry in Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire and Nigeria.
  • Animal feed: Economical substitute for maize in poultry, pig and cattle feed formulas. Price 30 to 50% lower than whole rice.
💡 Brewing opportunity

The rapid development of local breweries in West Africa creates growing and predictable demand for broken rice. Annual supply contracts with breweries allow significant volumes to be secured with price visibility.
