The Maghreb and Middle East are the fastest-growing markets for premium olive oil. Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria have an ancient olive-growing culture but insufficient production to meet growing demand. Gulf countries (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar) import olive oil heavily as a premium product associated with the Mediterranean diet.
Tunisia produces high-quality Extra Virgin olive oil at prices 25 to 35% lower than Spanish and Italian origins. EU-Tunisia association agreements allow preferential-duty imports into Europe. For exports to Africa and the Middle East, Tunisian origin enjoys an excellent reputation.
