The olive oil market has been under severe pressure since 2022: repeated droughts in Spain and Italy, historically high prices, constrained supply. In this context, Martigane has strengthened its multi-Mediterranean-origin strategy to guarantee supply continuity for its B2B clients at controlled prices — with Tunisia as the key origin.

The global olive oil market in 2025

Spain is the world's largest olive oil producer (approximately 45% of global production), followed by Italy, Greece and Tunisia. The successive droughts of 2022 and 2023 caused 30 to 50% production drops in Spain, pushing global prices to record levels. In 2024-2025, the situation is progressively stabilising, but prices remain elevated vs historical standards.

For B2B buyers, this volatility creates an opportunity: Tunisia has established itself as a serious qualitative alternative, with prices 25 to 35% lower than Spanish and Italian origins for excellent-quality oils.

🫒 The 4 regulatory categories

Extra Virgin: acidity ≤ 0.8%, cold-extracted, impeccable organoleptic profile. The premium category.
Virgin: acidity ≤ 2%, slightly lower sensory quality but widely used in cooking.
Ordinary: refined olive oil blended with a little virgin. Neutral taste, competitive price.
Pomace: from pressing residues, lower quality, mainly for industry.

Why Tunisia is the preferred origin in 2025

Third-largest global olive oil exporter, Tunisia has 80 million olive trees — among the oldest and most drought-resistant in the Mediterranean basin. Its production is less exposed to European droughts, labour costs remain competitive and the quality of its Extra Virgin oils is recognised at international competitions.

🌿 Organic certification

Martigane can source Extra Virgin olive oil certified Organic (AB France, EU Organic certifications) from Tunisia and Spain origins. The organic market is growing strongly in French and Belgian retail, with structurally superior gross margin vs conventional.
