With 77 million tonnes produced annually, palm oil is the world's most consumed vegetable oil. In Sub-Saharan Africa, it is the staple cooking oil — as essential as sugar or salt in households. Martigane structures import-export operations on palm oil to and from Africa, with particular expertise in bulk oil logistics.

Palm oil: an indispensable role in global food supply

Palm oil is present in 50% of consumer products: margarines, biscuits, chocolates, spreads, cosmetics, household products. Its high-temperature stability, melting point and competitive price make it an irreplaceable raw material for the global food industry.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, palm oil is also produced locally (Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon) but local production remains insufficient to meet demand. Martigane imports from Malaysia and Indonesia to supplement supply for African and European clients.

🌴 RBD vs CPO: what's the difference?

RBD (Refined Bleached Deodorized): refined, bleached, deodorised oil. Pale yellow colour, neutral taste, FFA < 0.1%. For direct consumption, industrial frying, margarines. Export standard for West Africa.

CPO (Crude Palm Oil): unrefined, orange-red, rich in beta-carotene. FFA up to 5%. For local refineries that refine on site. Lower price than RBD.

Sustainability and RSPO certification

Palm oil is subject to controversies linked to deforestation in South-East Asia. In response, the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) certification guarantees production meets strict environmental and social criteria: no deforestation, biodiversity protection, workers' rights compliance.

For European distributors whose clients are large retail chains or manufacturers sensitive to CSR issues, Martigane can source RSPO-certified palm oil from certified mills in Malaysia and Indonesia, with Chain of Custody (CoC) documentation.

📊 African market

Africa consumes approximately 6 million tonnes of palm oil per year, part of which is imported. The main importing markets are Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Cameroon. Demand growth (+4%/year) exceeds local production growth, creating a structural deficit that Martigane helps to fill.

Specific logistics for bulk palm oil

Palm oil presents an important logistical constraint: it solidifies at ambient temperatures below 25-30°C (melting point between 33 and 39°C depending on the grade).

Martigane works with freight forwarders specialising in liquid oils to guarantee product integrity at destination.
