There are two main families of sunflower oil on the B2B market — and it is essential to distinguish them to properly supply your shelf or distribution network:
E900 is legal and safe at authorised doses, but it addresses a specific need for intensive professional frying. For the domestic consumer using small quantities at more moderate temperatures, E900 brings no perceptible benefit. Moreover, oil without additives better matches consumer expectations of naturalness and simplicity — and complies with organic certification requirements that totally exclude it. The 1L bottle without E900 is sunflower oil in its purest, most accessible form for the general public.
Sunflower oil is the second most consumed oil in France after olive oil, with annual consumption of approximately 300,000 to 350,000 tonnes. It is the highest-volume segment of the retail oils aisle. Since the 2022 crisis linked to the Ukraine war (which momentarily doubled prices), demand has returned to normal with diversified origins (Ukraine, Argentina, Hungary, France). For distributors, it is a very high-rotation product, moderate margin, but essential for the attractiveness of the grocery aisle.
The natural and dominant channel — hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores. 1L sunflower oil is a basic necessity product that must be present in every grocery aisle. In supermarkets, it is typically displayed with 3 to 5 bottle facings minimum, usually with two or three competing brands (own-label + one or two national brands). Martigane can supply regional buying groups and independent supermarket networks.
1L sunflower oil is an indispensable top-up purchase in neighbourhood grocery stores — consumers who forgot to buy it at the supermarket come here for it. In this channel, rotation is regular but volumes are lower (1 to 3 cases per week depending on store size). Martigane delivers these outlets directly from Lille D+1.
Sunflower oil is particularly consumed in North African, sub-Saharan and Eastern European communities where it is the main cooking oil. In these grocery stores, rotation can be very high (10 to 30 cases per week in large urban grocery stores). The 1L format is the most appropriate — some grocery stores also offer 5L for large families. This is a market Martigane knows well, particularly in Belgium and northern France.
In this channel, additive-free sunflower oil perfectly meets naturalness requirements — especially if it comes from a traceable supply chain (French or certified Ukrainian origin) or is available in organic version.
