Brazil — the world's leading coffee exporter

Brazil has been the world's leading coffee producer and exporter for over 150 years, accounting for approximately 30 to 35% of global production. The country produces both arabica (80% of output) and robusta/conilon (20%), offering a unique range of cup profiles for all markets.

The exceptional quality of Brazilian green coffee stems from its diverse terroirs: the Minas Gerais plateaus at 700–1,200 m altitude for fine arabicas, the valleys of Espírito Santo for high-yield conilon, and the mechanised plains of Paraná and São Paulo for industrial volumes.

☕ How to read an SCA classification?

The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) grades green coffees based on a defect count system and cup-quality scoring. A Fine Cup (specialty) scores ≥ 80/100 in cupping, with fewer than 6 defects. Good Cup (superior commercial) allows up to 26 defects — ideal for retail and food service. Rio Minas presents a characteristic iodic note highly valued in Italy and Portugal for powerful espresso blends.

Understanding Brazilian green coffee grades

Brazilian green coffee is classified by two complementary criteria: bean size (screen) measured in 64ths of an inch, and cup quality assessed by certified Q-Grader tasters. A Screen 17/18 guarantees uniform beans of 6.75 to 7.14 mm, ensuring even roasting and balanced extraction.

  • Arabica Fine Cup Screen 17/18 — Premium grade, fruity and floral notes, bright acidity. Ideal for specialty roasters and high-end coffee shops.
  • Arabica Good Cup Screen 17/18 — Superior commercial quality. Round body, moderate bitterness. Standard for European retail and collective catering.
  • Arabica Rio Minas — Bold profile with characteristic earthy and iodic notes. Highly sought after for espresso blends in Italy, Portugal, Spain and the Middle East.
  • Robusta/Conilon Screen 13 UP — Caffeine content 2× higher than arabica, powerful body, dense and persistent crema. Essential component of espresso blends and industrial instant coffee.

Markets and applications

  • Artisan roasters and specialty chains — Arabica Fine Cup and Good Cup in containers, with SCA analysis certificate and per-60kg-bag traceability.
  • Instant coffee and capsule industry — Robusta/Conilon in bulk or big bags for the industrial volumes required by processing plants.
  • Retail and collective catering — Good Cup Screen 15/16 for private label and institutional catering. Excellent value for money.
  • West Africa and Maghreb export — Robusta and Rio Minas in high demand for everyday consumption. Filter and Turkish coffee remain strong consumption habits in these markets.
