Brazil — the world's grain store

In under 40 years, Brazil has become the world's leading soybean exporter and one of the foremost exporters of corn and sugar. This performance is built on the vastness of the Cerrado — the tropical plateau of central-western Brazil — whose 200 million hectares of farmland, exceptional sunlight and regular rainfall create ideal conditions for large-scale agriculture.

Brazilian soybean exports exceed 100 million tonnes per year (2024/2025), shipped from the ports of Santos, Paranaguá and Rio Grande to Asia (led by China), Europe and the Middle East. Brazilian corn exports exceed 50 million tonnes annually, primarily to South-East Asia, Africa and the Near East.

🌾 What is soybean meal?

Soybean meal is the solid by-product obtained after soybean oil extraction by pressing and solvent (hexane). It contains 46 to 48% crude protein, making it the primary protein ingredient in compound feed for poultry (chickens, turkeys), pigs and aquaculture fish. Global demand is driven by growing animal production in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

Four products, four markets

  • Soybean — Primarily destined for oil mills and crushers that extract soybean oil and meal. Identity Preserved (Non-GMO) certification available on request for demanding European and Japanese markets. Vessel volumes range from Handysize (12,500 MT) to Capesize (100,000+ MT).
  • Corn — Used for animal feed (70% of uses), ethanol production, starch and glucose manufacturing, and direct human consumption. Brazilian Yellow Corn No. 2 is equivalent to the US Grade 2 standard.
  • Soybean meal — The world's leading protein ingredient for poultry, swine and fish feed. A protein content of 46 to 48% and absence of trypsin inhibitors after toasting make it the reference ingredient for compound feed manufacturers.
  • Wheat 11.5% protein — Milling wheat from Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, suited to bread flour production, biscuit manufacturing and starch production. The Zeleny > 22 parameter guarantees good baking strength (W ≥ 180).

Bulk maritime logistics: from the Cerrado to your port

  • Handysize (12,500–35,000 MT) — Versatile vessel, access to secondary ports and small terminals. Ideal for medium orders to African and Mediterranean ports.
  • Supramax / Ultramax (50,000–65,000 MT) — Good balance of volume and flexibility. Most common on Brazil–Africa and Brazil–Mediterranean routes.
  • Panamax (65,000–80,000 MT) — Standard for major transoceanic routes. Brazil–Northern Europe route very active.
  • Capesize (100,000+ MT) — Reserved for very large industrial volumes, specialised terminals only.
📋 Documents provided for each cargo

Every shipment systematically includes: analysis certificate (moisture, protein, aflatoxins — SGS or Bureau Veritas laboratory), Brazilian phytosanitary certificate, certificate of origin (Brazilian Chamber of Commerce), bill of lading (B/L), packing list and customs invoice. Non-GMO certificate (IP certificate) available on request for soybean.

Destinations and customs specifics

  • European Union: 0% customs duty for soybean (CN 1201 90 00). No anti-dumping tax for Brazil origin. Non-GMO soybean meal commands a market premium in Label Rouge and Organic supply chains.
  • West Africa (ECOWAS/UEMOA): 5% ECOWAS CET on corn and soybean. Strong demand from flour mills and animal feed factories in rapid expansion.
  • Maghreb: Algeria and Morocco are major importers of corn and soybean meal for their domestic poultry industries. Import under approved operator licences.
  • Middle East: Saudi Arabia, UAE and Egypt import significant volumes of soybean and corn for poultry and aquaculture industries. Halal certification not required for raw grains.
